A Hotei-kura (saddle) from the Edo period, featuring a Kao (stylized signature) and an inscription dated to Keian (1648).A Hotei-kura is a type of saddle characterized by its rounded and voluminous form, lacking the umi (concave depressions) in the front and rear arches, instead extending the iso (side panels) outward in a peaked shape. Due to the rarity of surviving examples, this piece is considered highly valuable. The saddle is adorned with black lacquer, featuring mukaidomoe-mon (opposing tomoe crests), gold and silver ryas (flowing water motifs), and two chrysanthemum designs in makie (gold and silver lacquer). This piece has been designated as a Koshu Tokubetsu KichoShiryo  (Specially Important Valuable Material) by the Society for the Study and Preservation of Japanese Armor and Arms.
